For a broken tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. For severe pain, over-the-counter pain relievers can help temporarily.
Don’t go to the ER unless you’re dealing with life-threatening swelling that affects your breathing or bleeding that won’t stop. Emergency rooms can manage pain and infection, but they can’t fix the actual dental problem. You’ll end up needing to see a dentist anyway, often in more pain and with a bigger bill.
